5 COPD Breathing Exercises to Relieve Breathing Difficulty

Apart from including a few habits such as quitting smoking, you can also practise some

COPD breathing exercises

to help alleviate your symptoms like shortness of breath. You can also consult your physician to find out what kind of exercises you should try based on your specific needs. Here are five

COPD breathing exercises

that can help relieve your breathing problems.

  • Pursed Lip Breathing

Sit in a chair with your head and shoulders relaxed forward. Purse your lips with a slight opening to allow air in and out. Now breathe through your lips without forcing the air in a relaxed manner. Slowly increase the depth and breathe for longer periods of time. Do this exercise for a few minutes regularly or when you find yourself short of breath.

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing

Breathing with your diaphragm is actually the right way to breathe. Just lie down and relax with your knees slightly bent upward. You can place a pillow below your knees for support. Place your hands on your stomach and breathe in feeling your palms raise up with your abdominal muscles, and breathe out pushing down your abdominal muscles into your stomach and slightly towards lungs as if pushing them towards your neck.

  • Pranayama

Pranayama is a breathing exercise in yoga that helps regulate the process of breathing through conscious control, thus, strengthening the lungs and increasing their capacity to retain breath for long time.

  • Buteyko

Buteyko, like pranayama, focuses on regulating the way a person breathes. It helps return back the involuntary nature of breathing in a proper way, diaphragmatic breathing that is.

  • Stretching and Strengthening Exercises

In addition to all the above breathing exercises you can also practise exercises that involve stretching and strengthening of your torso. Yoga, aerobics, and other exercises that help build up a strong chest come under this category. These exercises improve your lung capacity and increase it’s strength.

These exercises hardly take you more than ten minutes everyday. Allot some time for these exercises to ensure yourself better chances of recovery. Though these

COPD breathing exercises

are not a cure, they will certainly help improve the health and longevity of your lungs.
