5 Best Asanas in Yoga for Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory problem that causes inflammation of air passage ways when exposed to allergens resulting in difficulty in breathing.

  1. Pranayama

    • Pranayama is a breathing exercise that involves breathing slowly and deeply for longer periods of time using the diaphragm. It helps you improve your lung capacity, regulates the way you breathe and helps you relax.
    • It requires that you sit or lie down relaxed, breathe with your lungs as deep as you can. Do not push yourself and put effort more than you can manage. Then, exhale at a slower rate. Practise this for a few minutes regularly.

    • This pose requires you to start in Virasana. Virasana is when you kneel and sit between your feet, with your knees at comfortable distance, but, not too far. Then, with your palms placed on the floor beside your feet, you slowly bend backwards to life on the floor.
    • Arch your waist up a little bit, with your shoulders supporting you lightly, and stretch your neck so that there is no pressure on it. Breathe constantly while in this pose for almost a minute. Then come back to Virasana following the same steps backwards.
    • Do not try to overstretch yourself. Do it as long as you feel comfortable.
  5. Savasana or Corpse Pose

    • This is the yoga pose that comes in the end. Lie down on the floor, with your arms at either side of your body, palms facing upward, and feet at comfortable distance. Breathe constantly.
    • Starting from your feet imagine relaxing and being aware of each and every part of your body till your head. Feel and be aware of all your relaxed body, and observe your breathing.
    • You can meditate in this asana if you wish to. Sometimes you might fall asleep while doing it. But, when you are used to the asana and have practised long enough it can completely relax your body and mind.

If you find the floor hard or cold while you are doing yoga, you can try using a mat or a blanket on the floor.
