How to Distinguish Asthma from Bronchitis?

Acute or severe bronchitis is a respiratory disease and is caused by the inflammation of bronchi (small tubes carrying air to the lungs). On the other hand, asthma is also a respiratory disease caused by the inflammation of airways. Distinguishing

asthma

from

bronchitis

can be tough as most of the symptoms are common for both these conditions. But there are ceratin symptoms which can help you to differentiate between the two conditions. Read on to know more.

Instructions

  • Firstly, don’t jump to conclusions based on the symptoms that you notice. Vist your doctor and let him confirm if it is asthma or bronchitis. The doctor would perform a physical exam and then confirm the disease based on the observations.
  • Note down your symptoms. Bronchitis usually starts off with a cold, sore throat, mild fever, runny nose and cough. You would also experience shortness of breath. Asthma symptoms do not always include cold or a sore throat. Asthma would cause more wheezing when compared to bronchitis.
  • Keep a note of the duration of symptoms. Bronchitis is generally an acute process. Most patients recover in a short time span (within 10 days). On the other hand, asthma is a chronic condition and symptoms including shortness of breath and wheezing can extend over a long time period. If you experience these symptoms then asthma might be the cause.
  • Also, keep a track of your response to treatment. Most antibiotics provide quick relief from bronchitis whereas asthma symptoms may take time to go away. Inhalers are very effective in providing relief from asthma.

Note

– Troubled breathing and wheezing are primary symptoms of asthma. Cold, runny nose and cough are common bronchitis symptoms. Knowing about these would make it easier for you to differentiate between these two conditions i.e.

asthma

and

bronchitis
